Alexa tells a royal fairytale

A reactive campaign that transformed a print ad into a live Alexa storytelling experience.

Context

The wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was one of the biggest cultural moments of the year. Amazon Echo had an opportunity to join the celebration in a way that showcased the magic of voice interaction.

Idea

Create a reactive print ad that readers could activate by asking Alexa: “Alexa, tell me a story with a fairytale ending.”

Execution

I wrote an original fairytale-style poem about Meghan and Harry’s love story, which Alexa performed when the prompt was spoken.

The art direction continued Amazon Echo’s existing campaign style, using Gemma Correll’s illustrations and Cookie Studios’ animation style to maintain visual consistency. The Echo Dot formed one of the tiers of the wedding cake, keeping the product front and centre while celebrating the marriage.

The campaign launched in press and was later extended across paid and organic social.

Worked with the Alexa voiceover artist and the Amazon Echo team to bring an immersive poem I wrote to life, created to celebrate Meghan and Harry’s wedding.

Once upon a time, while working in LA,
An actress dreamt about a prince,
but her dream seemed far away.

Meanwhile, back in London,
a real prince resided there,
wondering if the day would come
that he’d find his maiden fair.

Although they longed for romance,
they were just too busy for love,
until a fairy godmother turned up
and gave them both a shove.

Off they went on their blind date,
where they learned they were two of a kind.
Who’d have thought it – the same hopes and dreams;
it’s as if their stars were aligned.

Now there’s a fairytale wedding.
We’re all invited – even me!
So let’s all come together
and enjoy the ceremony.
